Fat Elvis has mange

He's one of our Guinea Pigs, he's developed a bald patch that's a bit scabby. Any tips before we see the vet?
sean

Mange is caused by some sort of mite isn't it? Go and buy some sort of powder/spray from the pet shop maybe?
Behemoth

That's what my internet research tells me and there's some sort of drug to sort it but dosage needs to be measured, I think.

Dont' poison him. No use in getting rid of the mange if Fat Elvis kicks the bucket Laughing

Maybe asking a vet for advice would be enough?
ninat

could be mange, but could also be ringworm..

go to a horsey place and buy a £5 tube of wormer paste that has 'ectin' in the name. Get one of those cotton wool bud thingies you clean your ears out with and get a small dollop on the end of it, then wipe that into his mouth. As these things are used on large livestock/horses, which cannot be weighed easily and accurately, dosage is flexible so you'll be fine. This will kill parasitic skin problems.

It's possible (unless mites have been diagnosed) he has a very common fungal skin infection guinea pigs get which is mistaken for mites - you need to go to a chemist and get 'nizoral' shampoo, which has an active ingredient beginning with K that I can't remember the full name of, which kills fungus. Bathe him with that according to instructions - may need repeating every couple of weeks until it's cleared up, but don't do it every day or anything or you'll create more skin problems.

For open sores due to scratching in severe cases, Nelson's herbal calendula cream they do for cuts and sores helps it heal really fast. It stings at first (i've tried it on myself) but after 20 seconds or so it calms down and soothes. I wouldn't apply it anywhere they can lick themselves though - so onlyneck/back areas, which is where they tend to scratch.

or read this:

vets killed a lot of my guinea pigs with skin complaints before I got googling!

Thanks - not sure if its mange or fungal, intially I would have said fungal from the description but he's got a small irritated area and the mites sound awful. Want to nip it in the bud so it looks like a trip to the vets this evening.
Behemoth

Vet says mange. but might be fungal. Rolling Eyes Anyway, goo applied and Elvis is in semi-retirement.

I'm guessing s/he wasn't specific about the mite that caused it? Guinea pigs aren't exactly in my remit but we have some again now so...

Did you ask the vet what the withdrawal period was on the ointment was for human consumption? Laughing

Given that Elvis is a guinea pig, semi-retirement from what? Shocked

Hope he's better soon...

Having checked up on the transmission of the guinea pig mange mite (by contact with other guinea pigs) I assume he works as a guinea pig escort. Laughing

OK OK now I know fat Elvis is going to be ok and is not on the brink of death, i have to confess that I thought the title of this thread was a cryptic crossword clue.

Rolling Eyes

Nooooo.... I live in a world devoid of most forms of 'popular entertainment' (and like it that way) Embarassed Cool

Go on - what film? Laughing
Behemoth

He's beleives he's a stunt double in G Force, a wholly plausible film about Secret Service Guinea Pigs.

For the locals maybe Cool
Behemoth

Fat Elvis is now on antibiotics and goo. Not getting worse but not getting better.
Ixy

seriously - try the 'ectin' horse wormer, brings them round quick. but i'd stop the goo and antibiotics first in case it's too much. I'm wondering what the antibiotics are sposed to be doing actually in this case? Confused Confused Confused Confused

Inverctin or some such is the drug of choice. Antibitocs, secondary infection of the sores.
Ixy

Have you/the vet tried anything for fungal infections?
Behemoth

Not yet, mites were seen yesterday, clear them up and see what happens, maybe resoirt to the Nizeral (sp?).
Ixy

Yes that would be my next trick for sure
Rob R

I assume Elvis has had the usual doctory advice- lose weight, eat a healthier diet, stop smoking, etc? Smile
Tavascarow

Get a bottle of Thornit.
I know its mainly used for ear mite but the mite that causes mange is closely related & is affected the same way.
I've used it with dogs that had mange after we had an outbreak caught from foxes & it worked brilliantly.
Smile
mihto

Just remember that medication intended for one species may be toxic to another. dosage is sometimes vital.

What does your vet suggest?
Behemoth

Guinea pig dosage. There's a picture of small furry things n the box.
