Feeding pigs slightly green potatoesI have left some potatoes uncovered for a few days and they have turned slightly green on one side. Could I feed these to the pigs?

Hmmm... i'm not sure.. but my pigs turn their nose up at potatoes, when they're not green!

How about chopping off the green bits and boiling them up for the pigs? Then you will be a bit more comfortable about it and they will definitely be happy.

Um - the green bits are high in some toxin - hyacine? - which is why it is a bad idea for people to eat them. Given pigs are used as test subjects in place of humans because of similarities in biology, maybe not a good idea.

Yup. I've always been lead to believe that green potatoes were poisonous.

The toxin is solanine. It's not very toxic to people, no idea about its effect on pigs though.

resistance is fertile

Just chuck them in, they will be fine, if they are not your pigs would have to pretty frail!
Ours eat tons of spuds, including green ones, and weve never had a sick pig yet

Not wise to feed raw potatoes to pigs full stop, in moderation i doubt they would come to any harm however raw potatoes contain too much starch making them very hard on the pigs digestive system.
If your feedeing them make sure there well boiled to be on the safe side.

Depends on the people. If you eat spuds all your life you develop a level of resistance - the odd pale green bit left on by mistake. Visitors to spud eating countries from entirely rice diet countries can be laid up with dodgy tum for several days after eating spuds that wouldn't affect a lifelong spud eater. So hate to think what a green one would do.

It's only a few spuds that are very slightly green - the pigs get a couple as a treat and they seem to be fine. I'd not feed them really green ones.
