found some wood blewits as well but they were full of maggots.

As they fruit into late autumn and winter, you find a lot less maggots in 'em.

My Wood Blewits have been relatively maggot free so far this season. The ones I got in the New Forest last week were very nice  Also look out for Lepista sordida - looks like a rather under-feed Wood Blewit - just as nice but suffers less from maggots. I also think that the wet summer has been good for the flys and hence 'good' for the maggots.
Out of interest I got quite a few Chanterelles this morning - they are comimg back! But, there is a hard frost in the Forecast for this Wednesday, Thursday and Friday morning!
