First Honey Harvest!Got our first honey harvested today and about 40 lbs of it is sitting deliciously gloopy in a barrel in the kitchen.
Had some help and the lend of an extractor from a really good friend Alan who has been our bee guru this year (especially when we were in a real panic in May when our hive swarmed 4 times!!!).
I am now waiting for delivery of some jars (which I had hoped would be here on Friday but oh well), and planning what to do with the wax we got.
Looking at some recipes for handcream and lip balm and getting very excited.
The deal has always been my OH does the actual suit wearing and hive keeping stuff and I deal with the produce when it gets to the kitchen but I have been so excited by this I am now looking at getting my own suit too!
Right off to try and make tea in an impossibly sticky kitchen!

WOW! Lucky you, that is fantastic.
Our bees are still establishing so no honey this year. Hopefully next.
Oh and do get a suit - it's always easier with a second pair of hands and I find it fascinating to watch (although he does all the real work).
Honey and toast....
..... or my fav potato bread, butter and honey.

I left a whole super on for the bees and took just a few frames - Hopefully we'll get a bit more next year. Well done Kirsty.

No one has got any honey around here , we have all been advised to feed the bees, they are very hungry.

Cool!
It hasn't been the best of years for honey here but better than the last two.
I'm like Jamanda only taken a few frames for personal consumption but that's a few frames more than the last two years.
Shame as I have any number of neighbours who would love to buy some.
I'm just glad the three colonies I run keep coming through the winters.
With reference to your swarms you would be best putting on a second brood box in April to give the queen more room to lay.
A single national or WBC brood isn't big enough for your average queen.

Nor around here. The person we know with many hives (it's a business) is feeding a lot of them.
Glad you are getting plenty Kirsty.

Stockport is doing quite well so far but we will see if our hive makes it through the winter.
The honey came off a hive in it's second year that's on our allotment. Loads of stuff for the ladies to feed on there and hymalayan (sp?) balsam is so prolific around here they are gorging themselves on it.
Hope to harvest off our second hive which is at the bottom of our (not very long) garden next year.
Fingers crossed for everyone's hives over the winter.
