First steps in cables

So, I've found a cable pattern I want to try. It's a jumper, with a sort of celtic knot pattern on it. I have a cable needle, and a chart with lots of slashes on it. I intend to practice the cable panel on a dishcloth first. Can someone point me in the direction of a beginners guide, so I can decode the chart and have a go?

that help?

if ti's a complex cable pattern, I would suggest you keep a very good record of exactly what row you are on.

and remember, if you are practising on a dishcloth, it won't be easy to do cables in cotton, it dosen't have the stretch to do them well, or the bounce to hold them nicely in place. it will be hard to do them and they won't look that good. if you just want something cheapish to practice with, use a bogstandard acrylic. it mimics wool better so you won't end up swearing at your cables.

Thanks Toggle. I hadn't thought about the cotton - I'm sure I can find something springy instead.
