Flat panel recommendationsWhat do you use?
Must have both DVI and VGA inputs - something like this. Thoughts?

I use HP workstation (rather than consumer) monitors. But Iiyama are very good as well. You might also consider lacie if you are doing graphics.

Just bought one myself, as it happens

Unless colour/video/games is especially important I will take some convincing that there is a lot of difference these days?
For years how I have stuck with two 19" monitors side by side as the cheapest way to a lot of screen real estate. Mind you looking at the prices people have posted that approach does start to look pointless.

The Pebble looks nice but I don't see that it's particularly strides better than the Iiyama.
I'm thinking of possibly two 20" flat panels - I too have got rather used to loads of screen space
Colour is important, but colour management is such an imprecise science I'll instead rely on experience and my trusty Pantone swatch book.

If colour is important get a CRT as they are better for colour representation.
If you really want an LCD get a LaCie together with a hood and blue eye calibrator. But NOT cheap. About £700 ex vat for their base model in 24" plus the price of a calibrator.
Otherwise get a mitsubishi, hp or ilyama and a calibrator.

I use a NEC Multisync 2070 20", Samsung Syncmaster 204Ts 20" (x 2), and IIyama Prolite E481S 19". The Samsungs are noticeably better than the others for viewing angles. I've just ordered a 24" Samsung as a result. But to put it context, they are actually all perfectly good for basic office work and browsing - and I would agree with the comment about CRTs, none of them are as good for colour accuracy as my old IIyama 21" CRT.

I would always suggest looking at one before spending money. A couple of years ago I had the pleasure of working on an IT project where I spent a fair bit of time helping users and seeing a fair range of LCD screens. Some were 'orrible and even plain text quite blurry while others were very good. Various NEC ones seemed the best. Is NEC and Samsung related as, IIRC, some NEC and Samsung screens are identical?

I've currently got an Iiyama 19" CRT as my main monitor, and a ageing Mitsubishi 17" as the secondary. One option would be to retire the Mits, relegate the Iiyama as the secondary display, and spend a little more money on a slightly larger (eg 22") flat panel as the main display.
