Fluorescent starter

W have 4/5 year old 2d fluorescent fitting at work, the tube had failed, when I took the lamp out I noticed that the outside plastic case of the starter had disintegrated.

I've put a new lamp in but it's not starting so I assume the starter needs replacing too, am I likely to die if I fiddle around with the unprotected starter gubbins to pull it out?
Nick

Depends. Are you going to turn it off at the fuse or not?
tahir

It would be much easier if I didn't have to, unless it leads to my untimely death.
Hairyloon

Have you got a neon screwdriver you can poke it with?
Not a foolproof test, but at least if it lights up then you know...
tahir

I don't. I guess I should turn the power off.

I don't. I guess I should turn the power off.

Or if not, then at least have a friend on standby to call an ambulance.
And be aware of where you'll fall if the shock knocks you off the ladder.

(do I give the impression that I speak from experience?)

If I fall I'll bang my head on the concrete floor and probably roll down the concrete steps, if I survive my wife will laugh, loads. If I die she'll probably laugh too. Rolling Eyes

it seems that the answer has presented itself, although a rubber glove is an option it isn't one i would choose if there is any sort of circuit breaker available.

are you still with us ?
tahir

Yeah, been too busy to play with it

adding oneself to a mains circuit always hurts

Meh. Everyone should try it once.
dpack

some are only able to try it once Wink OtleyLad

You really should get hold of one of these pen testers.
Just hold it against the starter and it will tell you if its live or not.
They are widely available and worth every penny (the one on the link is just 7.99).
Amazing how much you can diagnose with one - speaking as an electrician it was my most used tool. Carried it in my top pocket each and every day.
