Food Security

At last industry and government are talking about Food Security. http://www.stackyard.com/news/2008/02/food/06_nfus_security.html

I hope they include biofuels which could be one of the greatest threats to food self-sufficiency if they develop into an agro-industry.

you could acually take 5% of the agricultural land in the UK with no threat to food production, which occording to some on here think the UK shouldnt bother with and should just import from 'countries that do it better' Rolling Eyes but that aside, biomass is actually a big threat to the rainforests as it could develop into a high value comodity for 1st world countries! to be fair the rainforests are probably already screwed for many reasons Sad cant decide if im a persimist or a realist?

When climate change starts to accelerate the effects on world food production (particularly staples like wheat and rice) will be massive and FAST. Drought in the American Mid-west, changes to the SE Asia monsoon could leave hundreds of millions without enough food. Ensuring that this country can largely feed itself in these circumstances should be a vital policy of Government.

Food security should be a big political issue.
Fuel security should be a big political issue.

Government does not get it.
Therefore, we're screwed.

No they aren't, it's the president of NFUS asking for more subsidies.

Government in France, or the government of the UK, or all governments?

Despite the fact that the UK only produces 60% of our food (foodbycountry.com- figures account for total food produced, including exports)? Surely by that reasoning we could convert it all as long as we ship the rest over?

Realistically, we need to encourage food production in suburbs and towns, lobby councils to enable the selling of allotment produce, and set up Community Supported Agriculture schemes to reward proportionately those we prefer.

Unfortunately, more and more allotments are being comandeered by councils to sell the land for development - housing demand is rising still. subsidies and grants for growing fuel crops are going to make matters worse. the answer is simple - we admit we have a problem akin to third world countries in our own country - and start to adopt fair trading here. buy vegetables and dairy produce from farmers and market gardners instead of supermarkets. make food farming viable in this country, so farmers don't have to use their land for growing bio-fuel or turning into golf courses.
