For those who raise chickens for meat...I'm planning to write an article on keeping chickens for meat, and I'd like to hear why those who have done it got started. There may be lots of reasons, and the reasons may have changed... just give me the main thing that motivated you to do it.

Pretty much all of the above, but if I have to choose just one...

I haven't done it yet, apart from eating the odd cockerel, but we ahve prepared the area we are going to be using for them, as this years meat addition.
we have added a new meat species every year.
Next year is rabbit, I think.
Primarily, it is so we know exactly where are meat is coming from, what it has eaten and how it has lived. Taste will be a swift second.

We only have laying hens at the moment. When we move I will try and raise some of our own hens and eat the cockerals. If I had to choose one reason it would be 'To be sure that the chickens I eat lived a good life', although several of the other options would apply.
