Forage of the Week... Vote now!We discussed having a forage of the week section a while ago... Well, its about time we did it. The idea is that we'll have an article per week, hopefully prepared here in the foraging section and then eventually spruced up for presentation on the front page of the site.
So, starting next week (which we'll call 'April Week 2') we'll do it. I'll start, as no one else has volounteered, but I hope that others will take turns in doing this too because I certainly won't have time to do it every week (you have access to all the help and advice you'll need here, and a heck of a selection of pictures in our collection now). Said article should have notes on IDs, where you find it, and of course how you harvest and use it.
I anticipate that the third week of the month might be another green, but we clearly have to do St. Georges mushrooms at the end of April.
This will build up eventually into a pretty good collection of articles.
Normally I think we'll leave it to the author to decide what he thinks is in season, what he wants to cover. To begin with... What would you like?

I've put wild garlic, on the basis there are already recipes about for it, and it's very very nice!

What about nettles? I've got a bagful about to be turned into soup

Take some photos and you can write the next article.

Soup already started before I read that Sean. Do you still want an article - there's a lot already on nettles but I can do one with the next batch I make if you want?

There's a nettles article around, IIRC
Wild garlic starting to show leaves up here; ground elder also making an appearance

And very good it is too. Obviously written by a talented author. You can't have too many articles though.
|
gil

Indeed. And nettles are so good....

So is that a yes?
And on the subject of foraging what can I do with wild garlic - I've added it into scrambled eggs and croutons. I plan to shred some on top of my next pizza but what else can I do with it? The verges here are absolutely full of it at the moment. ANd is it just the leaf that can be eaten - what about the flowers?

Yes please to nettle article, GR
I've eaten the flowers of wild garlic. OK, but not as strong as the leaves

Excellent. Want to be put down for the week after next weeks then...? No pressure, you'll get ample help from the forum members

Lots of things. I like the leaves in a cheese sandwich, the flower buds seem to go well added towards the end of a stir fry, or added to a quiche or omelet etc.
As for nettles, we made what I'll call 'Bubble and Sting' tonight, bubble and squeak but with nettles, quite good actually.

Don't worry, we can sort that out. If you can produce pictures and some text we can turn it into an article.

steve01 - I guess cab was thinking we could all post information about 'this week's forage plant or shroom' to a thread that was named 'whatever the plant is', and someone would put together all the words and pics into an article.

Great!
I'll tell you what, I'll start out with the first one, looking from the poll like it'll be wild garlic, and you'll soon see what the plan is. Notes on identifying, finding, how to use it, etc. Once its up here on the forum it isn't heavy turning it into an article.

I can give a recipe for wild garlic pesto - I mentioned it a while back but didn't get round to it.
PS - I think St George's mushrooms will be early this season - found another patch at lunchtime

garlic
common
easy identified by sight ,smell and touch
easy found by smell ,sight
tasty even if you only take a little
good place to start
big plus ,it is unlikely to be mistaken for anything nasty for those who are new to such things

Slightly off subject but I spotted a few alpine/wild strawberry plants flowering on the bike ride in to work this morning.
Does this mean the fruit will start ripening very early this year? ... in May, June - unless it drops off in a late frost of course
Also saw a few violets.

That isn't especially early for wild strawberries, I get a few in May every year.

Gosh!
Well, I suppose you are a little further south than us.
Nothing nicer than a handful of almost too ripe wild strawberries.

Lots of wild strawberries in flower along the sunken lanes here - but then we are EVEN further south!
And for supper tonight I am about to cook leek risotto with wild garlic leaves and buds .

I'm wondering if 3 cornered leek and wild garlic should be covered together as flavours /uses / season of availablility very similar - round here at least!

We get so much more three cornered leek than wild garlic in these parts. May as well cover the two. Crow garlic too, do you think?

At the top of the thread, click on the button next to our choice.
Wild garlic has flat leaves and white flowers. Crow garlic has rounded leaves like chives and pink flowers
Crow garlic
Wild garlic or Ramsons
