Foraging in Crete

I'm in Crete and am picking fresh Figs everyday that grow on the road side along with Pomegranits and Grapes.

The olives aren't ripe yet and I hear you can find Lemon's' Limes and Oranges......but I haven't seen these yet.

Very Hot.

I love Crete - not been for a few years but hope they haven't over-developed it. Will never forget driving through the mountains and being overpowered with the brilliant smell of wild oregano.
Have a good holiday....... Very Happy

Hello Bingo,

I cannot understand someone that scavanges for food jetting off across the world Smile

Good to hear that you are having a good time in Crete. I love Crete, especially a place called Loutro:

Still on the mainland, but NO roads and NO cars, the only way to get there is by ferry. Fantastic food too.

You will be pleased to hear that it has been wet over here and the Chanterelles are doing very well - there should be a big haul for you when you get back. I also found 4 small-ish Cep's all in the same location. 2 were past it having been eaten by slugs, but 2 were excellent - they are coming!

Oh... I am on holiday for two weeks at the beggining of Sept, so don't pick all the mushrooms!

Figs great, poms a bit bitter, grapes fantastic esp. in the ARCHANES area, but raw olives from a tree no they are so tannini they are almost toxic. They need at least 4 months in brine to become palatable.I am talking about the dominant cretan variety the KORONEIKI .There are varieties like THROUMBOLIA,the local Cypriot var. that you can eat straight off the tree December time.

mushrooms of crete that I found when we lived there Leccinum lepidum, common ,is it edible? ,saffron milk cups, charcoal burners pleurotus eryngii, highly esteemed locally, hedgehogs ,both types, hygrocybe russula ,common with holly oaks , blewits and many others

We found lemons in a tree or two last week in Crete. Still green, but there. And lots and lots of figs.
