freecycle

Isn't it a great idea? I just collected a lovely old school desk for Ben. Just needs a bit of sanding down.

I've put in a cheeky request for bee keeping stuff now. You never know.....
Fee

You never know indeed, we've had an 8 x 6 greenhouse and a hardly used petrol lawnmower from Freecycle in the past.
gil

I've just had to join the local group again.
Find the site really irritating to use.
Local one is full of fridge-freezers wanted and pink dralon headboards offered.
Jamanda

I suppose if you pass on a couple of things and get a couple of things in a year it's worth the annoying posts.

I don't use the site - I just get a digest of the posts to my email in box.
gil

It's not annoying posts, just that my computer doesn't seem to like the site and keeps telling me the group is unavailable. And it took several attempts to rejoin as the instructions were not clear and the pages went round in circles.

I may be getting a load of (rare) Bob Dylan tapes tomorrow Very Happy

Funny enough there was one advertised on our norfolk freecycle. I thought about seeing if it was available but never got round to it Smile

Is it a Yahoo groups site? Go to edit membership, and select the daily digest option. Then you'll get one email a day with all the posts in, and never need to go near the website.

I've just got our last batch of freecycle offers - In it is a load of bee-keeping equipment

Large quantity of new 1lb honey jars (no caps)

Beekeeping equipment:

3 National supers + 1 National Brood box (some with frames)
New plastic Hoffman frame converters
Several queen excluders
Brand new hive barrow (for moving
hives)
Unused clearer board.

I've just asked if I can have them - Keep your fingers crossed for me as I really could really make use of the supers, excluders and Hoffman frame converters - The hive barrow and the clearer board would just be a bonus
Jamanda

Ooooh! You lucky thing! Yes fingers crossed!

Oh and Becki, tell Mark thank you for his kind reply to my Freecycle request

gil

I've just been down the road into a neighbouring parish, and acquired a big BOX of Dylan tapes (live, etc), + an extra assorted box of tapes. And met nice folk I've not come across before, with things in common. Must mention Downsizer to them, come to think of it.
Jonnyboy

I just joined a local one where three suffolk cross hens have been advertised. Is it bad form to ask for them?
gil

Why should it be ? The hens are on there to find a new home; you can't help it if you see summat you want before you have a chance to offer summat yourself

Dunno, just asking as I've seen a few people sounds off here about greedy freecyclers.
sean

I think that's more about people posting wanteds for cars/plasma televisions etc.
Chez

I think you are supposed to post an 'offered' one yourself before you ask for anything or post a 'wanted' - but if you stick up an offered and contact the hen chappie simultaneously I'd think that was fair.

As Sean says, the 'greedy' thing is more about people who post wanted after wanted which basically add up to "WANTED: Nice possession-rich life, please".

It's all about balance really, I think?

I got them Very Happy and it turns out the guy used to be Chairman of Lancaster Beekeepers until he was in a car accident a few years ago and had to give up beekeeping! He still had the equipment because it was lent out to friends who also kept bees but now he's getting rid of it all. I think I may donate the barrow to the club for everyones use - I mentioned it to him and he was chuffed to bits with that idea and pleased the equipment would be going to someone who could make good use out of it - Freecycle is fantastic when it works !
Jamanda

Well done you Very Happy Very Happy Very Happy
I just got an offer of Becki's Card Bee stuff from her hubby.

Our freecycles are made up of 90% wanteds now Sad It's sometimes things that are justified but more often than not it's for laptops, boats and cars Rolling Eyes
mochyn

My two local ones are excellent. I've had some goodies and given some stuff away, so it seems to work!
Frewen Feltmaker

I came off ours because unless you were welded to you computer it seemed to be a first come first served (I was on the daily digest).

Also there were a lots of big item wanteds.

Things might have changed though - perhaps I ought to re-register?
boisdevie1

Freecycle is a great idea. But I don't think the geographical side of things works that well. Imagine you're looking for, say a shed. if one came up in the next door freecycle group you'd never know. And it might only be 30 or 40 miles away, which would make the journey worthwhile.
That said. I'm looking to set up a freecycle group here in France.
gnasher

I love freecycle - I have had a treadle sewing machine in a beautiful wooden cabinet and tomorrow I am picking up 5 demijohns to go with the 7 I previously got from a different freecycle.

Better get planning some more wines I think!!

Someone got a car off ours last week.

Cars get offfered on ours as well but when people are asking for one I think it's wrong. Last week there were wanteds for a drum kit and a PA system - not to borrow, to keep. There are frequent wanteds for laptops and tv's - things like new rolls of chicken wire etc. When peope start stipulating what colour they're prepared to accept on their wanteds I think it's a bit cheeky.

I'm a member of all the Cornish freecycle groups - you don't only have to join the one where you live.
Jamanda

I'm a member of two - many people (including me) post the same things on both, but it's not a problem.
jamsam

im a member of two, although i use them for both the festival ( great way to get garden furniture and stuff for backstage and we offload alot of the left behind camping stuff) and personal. I was given a metal framed high sleeper bed a few weeks ago that had come from freecycle originally and a huge rollof lino, so James had a whole new room out of it, today ive asked for a nother metal freame high sleeper bed for sam as he is so jelous, and i got a reply almost instantly!!!

i freecycled my car and an entire garage full of 'stuff' last year but i should really get on with the clear out and offer some more!
JB

Our local one seems to not suffer from people posting wanteds for silly items (looking at today's list there's someone after a futon mattress and another for children's videos). Not tried offering stuff before but I have this week so we'll see how that goes.

Which reminds me - anyone want an extending oval dining table?
Jamanda

I'd have thought children's videos were quite a sensible "wanted" item. Children grow out of them and they become surplus to requirements quite quickly.
Stacey

ooh, someone's offering a 5ft phormium Cool

*must wait till husband gets back, must wait till husband gets back....*

We have had a high sleeper bed with setter that converts to a double bed on our local one for ages with no responce. Have a long list of stuff to put on but cant see the point if a £300 ish bed wont go.

Might join the ones for the larger towns near here to see if that will help.

Justme
Jamanda

I don't have a problem with people asking for more than they offer at all. It's about keeping things out of land fill, not some glorified swapshop. If you are furnishing your first home on a low salary you might want lots of things. If you are downsizing to a retirement bungalow after a lifetime a acquiring stuff you might have lots to offer but little that you want. The point is to bring the wants and offered together.

Sure there are chancers and it's mildy annoying to read through their gumph, but it's a price worth paying for the benefits I think.

Justme

I think that's a good idea, Justme. Although not everyone in a rural area is well-off, I'd reckon there would be more young people / couples / families in need of larger furniture in a town (because that's largely where they can rent/buy).
Lorrainelovesplants

How would you move a 5ft phormium? Think of the size and weight of the rootball you'd need to ensure it took when you replant it.
mochyn

Someone here has just posted a Wanted for a harp.
Stacey

Seems fair enough to me, they're dead expensive and most people who buy them give up quite quickly, there's prolly loads around in attics and spare bedrooms.
Lorrainelovesplants

ID ALSO LIKE:
a pump to pump up sons football (bike pump dosnt work)
a wheel barrow
A canoe
boxing gloves (small)
and any money that is cluttering up your house....
