French Translator

Can anyone recommend a French translator to translate a website from English to French?

The content will be provided in a Word document, in English, to be translated into French.

Fee, would it help to say whether there was any specific vocabulary or style involved, and (roughly) the quantity of content (like how many words)?

Well, that's what I was thinking! Smile

I'm just working over the requirements at the moment, so I'm not sure on number of words just yet, but we're only looking in the region of 8 to 12 pages (at the moment) that need to be translated.

They're a technical company, and their target audience are primarily techies too, in both the UK and Europe, hence me suggesting they think about making the site bilingual.

I was hoping to gather some quotes, to pass on to my customer, and let them make the decision of whether to go bilingual or not Smile

They're keen so far, but it depends on cost, of course.

Generally you get better results if you translate into your native language - so for french if you can find a French person you will get fewer errors in the end result.

although I do have a french IT dictionary....

And I only translate into English (and I would strongly suggest, that with very, very few notable exceptions, you avoid like the plague anyone who claims to translate out of their mother tongue - particularly if the end result is for publication).

Basically there are two routes you can take to getting a professional job - and I'm afraid you are very unlikely to get a professional job from an enthusiastic amateur. The first is to go through a translation agency, ideally one that specialises in software localisation/website translation. The other is to go directly to a mother-tongue translator who works specifically in this field. The Institute of Translation and Interpreting (my professional body) has a directory of members that you can search by language pair and subject area.

ITI also has an excellent little e-booklet about commissioning a translation. You will find it here. Give that a read and if you have any more questions, I'll be happy to help.

I only just noticed this thread. Doh.

As previously mentioned, it would be better to enlist the services of a French person for a technical document. Anything in 'normal' language I could certainly help with, but for something potentially very heavy on techie-speak, I do think you'd be better off with someone with French as their mother-tongue.

I can recommend a couple of people, both have done site translation work for my web-design customers; PM me if you need their details.

You must set the ad_network_ads_377.txt file to be writable (check file name as well).
