french vat.

if i am ordering by post items from france do i have to pay their VAT at 19%?? or can i some how claim it back?

If you are a VAT-registered business the French supplier would be able to sell the item to you at the price ex. VAT (indeed, he would have to). If you are an individual you have to pay it. This is because both France and the UK are in the EU, so the French supplier is not "exporting" the item outside the EU, he is effectively no different to a UK supplier (except he charges VAT at the French rate).

If you don't need to then I suggest you don't as it means your goods/services are automatically 15% more expensive to the consumer.

This assumes most of your customers are not VAT registered. If they are then it may pay to become VAT registered as you can claim back VAT for previous transactions (can't remember how far back but think it's 6 months). Registering for VAT also means you're acting as tax collector so there's more paper work involved but it does mean you can claim the VAT back on purchased goods.

hardly worth the effort then! by buying the product from france ime saving 40% on the uk price.
