Fuchsia berries - what to do with them

Not sure if this is the right place - but it is foraging, or rather Urban Foraging. Smile

Next door's hedge (around 5ft tall) is full of them. I had a nibble today - they were OK. Possibly they need to ripen a little more. They were only just squish-able between thumb and forefinger.

Any fans here? If so, how do you tell when they are ripe and what do you do with them?

Found this. Looks like picking a ripe one is an art.

There was a definite aftertaste and I would agree that peppery comes close. I couldn't detect any kiwi, but they were slightly grape like. I'll leave them a while and try again.

They are although I've yet to find one I'd happily eat more than one or two fruits.

The RHS link suggests jam but the plants you've found may not have the best fruit.

I'm going to keep a look out for them until I find one I like. Apparently, Mark Diacono makes fruit leathers with his. dpack

rather than jam unless cooking changes the taste ,fusia gin might work.

im not a fan of raw ones but they are fun through a peashooter
