garlic harvest

Just like to say thanks to whoever it was on this forum who recommended garlic variety Music last year - here's a pic of my harvest I'm really pleased, quite a lot of large heads (on the left of the photo) - I'll be keeping the best for replanting in October. Has anyone tried planting earlier, say from now onwards? or would that just lead to premature flowering?

I don't see any issue with planting soonish. We harvested yesterday too, really impressive, will definitely grow it again, over a wheelbarrow of bulbs

Ours is pretty good as well - we got more garlic than I've ever managed to grow before - Unfortunately mine got badly affected by rust so we had to harvest early in June- Still got a very very good harvest

I'm aiming for the same as last year, plant at Samhain and harvest at mid summer. It worked beautifully this time so I ain't changing it.

Now, do I use a bulb or 2 from this years bumper crop or do I go and buy new?

why not?

We sometimes plant saved cloves from our own crop. No probs.

Who sells Music, then? Not one I've come across. usually go for Thermidrome.

Ours was rotten - we harvested at midsummer because it was all so wet and it was starting to go over. Very few seem to have vernalised properly.

Grown through winter. Helpful for garlic, you want it in the ground at the beginning of winter, the cold helps it split into individual cloves, then they bulk out in spring. Garlic wants a bit of cold.

We planted them on the longest day, so they *should* have been. It was rather odd. I think they actually need to be below freezing for a bit, don't they? But not in a refridgerator kind of way.

We plant in October and harvest in July

Thanks Cab - that's what I do. Plant at Samhain and harvest at Midsummer so they get a full winter, all spring and some of summer.
