Geraniums

When's the best time to take cuttings?
Ian33568

We take cuttings throughout the year providing you don't use a flowering tip. Use hormone rooting powder or put them in a glass of water - they root (oh yes they do), either way when ready put them in a sandy/well drained soil.

Good luck

You'll probably find that over winter (kept in a frost free place) they will get a bit leggy, so come next spring you'll be able to take cuttings from the cuttings Laughing

At the end of the summer before last I happened to be in Carmarthen just as the council contractors were pulling up all the beautiful red geraniums (or more properly pelargoniums - geraniums are actually a hardy perennial Wink ) from a roundabout. They were dumping them in the back of their trailer, so I did an about turn and begged some for taking cuttings (they willingly gave me a bootful). I filled several pots and containers last summer as a result and had dozens left over to donate to the school May Fayre.

you can take softwood cuttings from the non flowering stems of true geraniums about now as well.We have a lovely brown leaved one with little pink flowers That should give us 20 or more cuttings in a few weeks. Use a nice well drained compost with plenty of grit and sand. Keep it moist over winter in a cold frame or the greenhouse and this time next year you'll have little plants to put in the garden Very Happy I love free plants

Can I have a cutting too please, my mum started collecting scented pelergonium before she died and I have 5 or 6 scents at the moment but would like to increase the family on her behalf, its the only non edible thing i activle cultivate, more than happy to send cuttings in return.

Strange, it's the only inedible thing I like to grow too. I'm only just re-starting my collection now.

What's the best way to package them for posting?
Cathryn

Me also, I used to have quite a collection. Smile

Could it come via the Fibre weekend at all Penny?

When I have sent them before i water the plant well in the evening then in the morning take the cutting, wrap the base in dampened kitchen roll and then into a plastic zip lock bag, then wrapped in a bit of bubble and then envelope and posted first class same day.
when they arrive just unwrap, trim the botom leaves off if nessacery and about 5 mm of stem then treat as a cutting you have taken yourself. 9 time out of 10 it seems to work for me.

oh yes and my mate the postie says if you put on 'careful live plants' they do normally take care of them
