Getting hits on a websiteI’m looking into the idea of doing a specialist website for smallholders. Now to get hits on the site I could:
Take out advertising to alert people to the existence of the site. But that’s expensive. So my question is, are there any ways to get more hits? For example, is it possible to have keywords that relate to the site that would be picked up by people doing a search with google or yahoo? How do you get on the first page of a google or yahoo search?
I’m very much a newbie at this so any advice would be very gratefully received.

If you look up on google the terms SEO or search engine optimization, then you will find reams of information on this, far more that we could tell you in a reply to the post.

My OH has spent the last two months or so doing this - it's a dark art, which has strange things like metatags and googlebots in it - sounds like a dungeons and dragons convention to me  But he knew nothing when he started, and just searched and serached and searched until he gradually started piecing the relevant information together - it's a vast topic, but as Jema said start with Google, then just read on. (and on and on and on......  ). However, there can be light at the end of the tunnel - if you do a search on google UK for "Tesco t-shirts", look who comes up second:D (well we did when I typed this)
