Getting more website traffic? Downsizer traders?Sorry, sounds like a bit of a junk mail headline. I've been thinking, though, off the back of Pookie's thread asking about how to drive traffic to her website.
Could we do a downsizer link exchange thing for people who are interested? If I understand rightly, search engine rankings are partly calculated by how many links you have coming in to your site. We could help each other out by cross-linking.
Also, we could set up a web-ring of downsizer traders so people who land on one of our websites could then browse around the 'ring' and see who else was there.
It probably wouldn't make a *huge* amount of difference - but every little helps.

The code is already there for it. It was one of the first things that was done.
It does require that you run php on the web site, but essentially you register, stick a bit of code on your site, and links appear there for other sites in the ring and you get reciprocal links.
If the interest is there the system can be reactivated.

How do you run php, then?

php is supported by most companies on their £5 a month shared hosting schemes. If it's not already running, I doubt you can get it installed.

I'd be interested - every outside link does help I reckon.

I am not so sure. I prefer to just have a small number of good quality relevant links on my sites. The problem with these web-rings is that you might end up with links that are not really relevant to your site and/or be linking on to other irrelevant sites. That doesn't help your own ranking, in fact it probably harms it.

I am sure that if we were to add up the total of daily visitors to our seperate websites we would come to an impressive number. Could we not have a single website that worked a bit like an online farmers market? Here's what I am thinking:
Everyone has their own separate page(s) but with some uniformity in layout so its not a jumble.
A Product/Service index and search facility
Single online payment system
When an item is ordered the details are sent out (via email) to the seller who then fullfills the order.
Site takes a small percentage (say 10%) to pay for hosting, etc and maybe some advertising. Retailers get 90% of their retail price - payments distributed from single payment system.
With a large product range we could attract more visitors and increase the visibility of our individual products.
Lots of details to cover and work out but what do you think?

It's something we kind of thought about at the start of Downsizer, we decided it wasn't something that could be a "Downsizer" project, but it could be viable, especially if it was categorised by say crafts, plants etc.
