Getting onlinepooo, I* have, as a last ditch attempt at getting my old pc to work deleted everything and reloaded XP. Can't get online though and BT says the drivers are missing. If so, the disc is also missing. What can I do?
*Good grief, you didn't think I did this on my own did you? I was talked through it on the phone by a techie friend. But I (nearly) sorted it out all on my own this morning.

what sort of connection do you have:
broadband with router
broadband with USB modem
dialup with internal modem
dialup with external modem
?

Down load the driver on your other pc. Then transfer it to the old one via usb dongle or burn to cd / dvd.

The first James.
Yes I could do that Richard. What exactly am I looking for? (Or should that be where?)

Find the make & model of the modem, then do a google for the driver for it.

If it's broadband with a router then you need no drivers. The configuration and software is entirely within the router.
See if you can download the manual for the router from somewhere but typically the procedure for connecting is;
Set you PC to use DHCP for net addresses
Connect your PC to the router with an ethernet cable
You may need to restart the PC at this point particularly if it's a windows box
Use a browser to connect to the router this will typically be on an address http://192.168.0.1 (pretty much most routers) , http://192.168.3.1, http://192.168.1.254 (BT home hub) or something similar.
Somewhere in that you should find information to set your user name and password and restart the router
You should now be online
Who told you you need software drivers?
Edit - just noticed you said this is an old PC in which case I assume you're posting that from a new PC which is connected via the same router? If so then you should just be able to set the old PC to DHCP ignore all the other steps and be online.
Or are you connecting wirelessly?

BT said drivers so I assume its a usb win modem for broadband.

So I assumed she has a router.

Then again BT support in the past tried to tell me that the internet only works with windows so I wouldn't put too much trust in what they say (some of their people are very good but some are not)

Ah lol Your right no driver needed but some times they use special software to set up the router with all the right setting username & password. Plus add the connection control prog to the pc.
What make of router is it?
Sounds like you need the BT connections CD / prog but you should be able to do it all manualy too.
Try HERE

Thank you all. I am still struggling with it.
I do however have a cunning plan in the shape of a visiting techie next week. So while I'm out dancing with his wife...

I've done the bit that you baulked at. And of course you can come with us if you prefer.
(I kind of forget the date and planned going out on the razzle with a friend so rather than cancel... )

I am wondering if your network card driver is working?
The hardware thingy under the control panel should tell you.
I was thinking this is a likely cause and I could bring a network drive pack.
|
Cathryn

Sorry, you got a bit technical for me there, which thingy did you mean? (When Jema comes over all non technical like that the foundations of my world tend to wobble )
Yes, you are probably right I can't see anything but can someone be more specific about what I am looking for please (and precisely where).

Is there a little LAN icon in your taskbar?

bollux
If your network actually is live, then it is something funky with BT broadband. I created a memory stick with a load of network drivers today on the assumption that it would be this. If it is not I am more than a little stuck.

No,the whole screen has a very basic look to it.
Ohh, sorry Jema, I have been out all day so didn't get to this for awhile. (I bought wine...does that help?)

Well we can still try, but I really don't pretend to be expert on this.

Well I was right, it is the motherboad drivers including rhe lan driver.
I have established it is the 915G intel chipset, but I have not located a driver download yet hint hint hint to anyone with time on hands.

It is a glorious day. Stop at once and get out into it. (He's downstairs, will talking via the internet be more effective I wonder? )

I always suspected that Snowball was the IT brains behind the scenes.

Go to the motherboard makers website assuming its an intergrated lan card.

Just need to take the machine apart or try and guess form the bios.

What are you doing home already?
You could wait til I get back and I could find the external hard drive with a list of what's what in the machine on it...
Get the hammock up, get outside, uncork that red wine it needs to breathe. Even if you don't want to relax, I will do when I get home.

We've been home about an hour, we walked round the fort, visited MJ and went to Abereiron. Now my mum is cooking dinner and my dad is sleeping
This is Helen if you didn't guess

Thanks to Jema (with of course the necessary familial support) I have just been emailed the necessary drivers.
Do I
- download them onto the external hard drive.
- transfer them onto the pc without them.
- click on them to open them
- try to get online
- come back here to ask what to do then?
|
jema

Get them across to the PC, they will either be something you can open and run in which case run it... or not in which case ask someone who has a clue.

Yoohooo look at me! Back online on my old pc.

You really don't want to know how I did it either.
I found the BThomehub installation cd and just went through the process...*blush*
