There's something rather revolting about the way they appear to have collapsed under their own weight... 
What happens to the pumpkins after the contest? Are they edible? Or do they just get composted/thrown away?

I asked that question today to the chap that won the competition on our site last year... they're edible, he donated his to a school.

They get sold, donated or sold and hollowed out and used to race across the river two weeks after the weight off. They are decorated and have oars, outboard motors attached to them. Sounds like a huge amount of fun for both the competitors and watchers. That happened on Sunday, but I was home by then.

I agree!
I wonder how they managed to get them out of their allotments or veg patchs?

I think you either get the giant vegetable thing or you don't. I don't, but it does look like those who do have a lot of fun with it.
