Glos Old Spot Piglet question!!!!Do young piglets prefer to be near people? As in is it necessarily better for them to be near the courtyard. We are getting two piglets in 2 weeks time and husband and I working out where best to put their run......
Choice:
a) Near courtyard in wooded area on temp basis as not big enough long term for big free range type pigs.
b) Straight into permanent 1 - 2 acre paddock 250 m from courtyard with pond nearby and well spring for mud baths!!!
Please advise as I can see lots and lots of trial paddocks all over the farm!!!!

I'm not a pig keeper, but in my limited experience with the pigs at Gareths work, they absolutely love being near people. I would hazard a guess that you'll find them easier to handle if they think they are part of the family to a point. Please ignore me if a proper pigperson says otherwise though I do have fond memories of the tamworth/boar cross pigs getting people in a pincer movement and herding them into the duckpond on more than a few occasions, so maybe familiarity isnt the best course of action.

The close to us option has won! Husband spent afternoon playing in the woods!!!
Piglets not arriving for 2 weekd and our living accomodation needs plumbing connecting, carpeting ( I've done the bits I can but heavy furniture....) painting cooker removing......etc etc but no the pigpen is first. Things to come huh?
