those sound like excellent books. i find a microscope to look at spore shape/size is also pretty useful for us fungi geeks

Spore print colour is listed in Phillips, and for me its almost always the starting point. I got into a habit of keying unknown samples out using the old edition of Phillips, which of course had a key that started with sproe print colour. The habit stuck.
skedone

must get phillips book one of these days
Pilsbury

O its been mentioned a million time on DS now but how do you do a spore print??

Dead easy. Get a bit of black card, and a bit of white card. Or paper.

Put the shroom gill side down on top of the two.

Put this somewhere out of the way, out of any drafts.

Come back later, look at the colour. Sometimes you need to scrape the spores together to see a colour.

Not foolproof, in that its only PART of any mushroom ID, but its a characteristic that rarely lies.
crofter

Spore print colour for this one is white/beige.

Oh...

I'm stumped.

Errm... Clitocybe nebularis var. alba? Gills wrong though... They make it look more like a Hygrophorus.

Its either a hard one or I'm having a brain dead moment Laughing
