Gratuitous garden picsFour reasons,
1. Jjust got a new camera (Sony Cybershot DSC-W100)
2. I've finished the fencing on that bit and am rather pleased with it
3. The grass is starting to sprout nicely
4. I've got the bean and pea canes in at last.
And I know that the veggies are probably a bit behind everyone else, but the beds didn't exist a month ago!

Well done you, it looks great
we're in a simlar position with our veg beds, they were hastily made 5 weeks ago just after the tidgy polytunnel went up. Trying to make the best of this between homes situation.

Polytunnel is next, where did you get yours?

Well we've got the little one that we've reskinned and a big one (no room for that here ), we got them both from Northern polytunnels, internet purchase. Very pleased with them and they are still going strong, little one has stood up to being taken down and re erected brilliantly.
I'd highly recommend them.

Very tidy. Show us again in a month or so when it is all in flower. Your pea and bean canes look rather spindly, you obviousely don't get the winds that we get here.
Nice job.

They are quite stiff bamboo canes pushed in about a foot and cross braced, I am quite sheltered here but do you think I'll need more?
The peas have string lines to climb up, as they are 'almost' self supporting.

Are you going to gap up the hedgerow?

Wasn't planning on it, there's a fence there, then a stream and then another fence/hedge. Any reason why I should?

Just thinking of wind protection

Ahh, It's not a prevailing direction so should be OK. I was planning on laying that bit but the idiot farmer 'laid' the other side with a JCB, so it would be horribly exposed.

Depends on the strength of the winds really. That would be flat in a second here when the winds come. Remember runner bean plants can be very heavy and once they topple they go down big time.
For peas we use twiggy sticks and keep them low to the ground. The runner beans we 'teepee' as it gives them extra strength. We are halfway up in the mountains here but in less windy areas you should be fine.

We got our tunnel from Morris Polytunnels in Co Tyrone. In it's third year now and we're very happy with it.

Great pictures. Well done. As for the bamboo supports: in my experience they are fine until the beans are at their peak (of cropping and height) then along comes an August storm and over it all goes. Nowadays I bray in a 3 by 3 post at each end with a T bar and anchor the end poles to it. Seems to do the trick.
