greening of water containers

Today I bought a new plastic water feeder for the chickens as the other one had become impossible to clean. It had gone green inside. We've regularly scrubbed to remove the algae but I guess thats not helped in that its created tiny scratches which the algae has an even easier job adhereing to. Does anything prevent this or are there safe dissolvers I can use?

greening of water containers

When I used to keep several guinea pigs their water droppers used to get extremely green from time to time. I found that half a baby bottle sterilising tablet dissolved in the bottle and left for a couple of hours, then bottle brushed and very thoroughly rinsed worked a treat. The pigs came to no harm and all lived to a ripe old age! Might be worth a try.
