Woodruff. Spreads like wildfire. Takes from a tiny bit of root cutting. Lovely clusters of little white flowers that smell like marzipan if you dry them and nice leaf shapes.

Very easy to get rid of if you get tired of it. Very pretty from early spring to .... well, mine is still going.

There are any number of cheap, easy to propagate herbaceous plants & low growing shrubs.
Depends on your tastes & soil/aspect of the site.
Finding ones that are chicken proof will not be so easy.
If they don't enjoy eating them they will scratch them to death.no smilies

If still looking for something - why not throw down a load of wildflower seeds (cheap to do) - both perennial and annual - the bees & butterflies would love you - just keep the chickens off while they are coming up - cos if anything like ours they will have them up in no time!no smilies
