ground elder allergies anyone?

Occasionally I meet someone who experiences a tingling sensation in the mouth when trying young raw ground elder leaves for the first time. the effect has been described variously, from 'quite unpleasant' to 'a bit like when you put too much toothpaste in your mouth'.

Has anyone here come across this kind of reaction?

It's worth noting that ground elder is an umbellifer ( same plant family as celery ) which now has to be mentioned in the warning about food allergies on packaged food.

New one to me.

But the thing to remember is that a non-forager has, in terms of the number of species he or she eats, a very slender diet.

Think about it, you go for a walk, you get home with a salad you've accidentally gathered. You've got in it rape, black mustard, chickweed, ground elder, alexanders, cow parsley, three cornered leek, dandelion, daisies, clover, hawthorn buds, flowering currant flowers... Of all of those, the only species that most non-foragers have ever eaten would be the rape!

So it is unsurprising that you'll find the occasional allergy, or find the odd thing indigestible. Its a wonder we don't encounter more of this really. And yeah, you'd expect some to be worse than others. Hadn't heard of it with regard to ground elder before though.

Never had that reaction. Nor anyone else I knwo who's eaten it.
But all are folk who don't have difficulty with celery.
