Guild of Spinners, Weavers and DyersI went to my second meeting of the local Guild of Spinners, Weavers and Dyers on Saturday and I just thought I would enthuse about how good it was.
I spend most of my time working from home at the moment and have got out of the habit of meeting new people, so I was a bit nervous about starting. But what a welcome! People were so friendly without being at all OTT and there's such a lovely atmosphere.
I've learned such a lot already. Last month there was Basket Making course which was quite intense but I finished a small basket by the end of the afternoon. It's even almost round .
This month was a hands-on fleece sorting demonstration, looking at the difference between Zwartbles, Ryeland and Shetland fleeces, spinning with a wheel and with a drop spindle. Everybody was helping each other and having a good natter, so knowing nothing was not a disadvantage. I even managed to spin some rudimentary "yarn" on a drop spindle and everyone was very polite about it .
I was given a whole Shetland fleece to bring home, so I've now got more wool than I thought possible and I'm itching to get started. I've been offered the loan of a spinning wheel and everyone was explaining the advantages of their particular model. Several of them said that they did not want to spin when they joined but now ....
I'm glad I decided to go and would recommend it to anybody. Thanks also to Gil who was the one who mentioned it to me in the first place.
Is anybody else a member of their local guild?

Glad you went and enjoyed it, cassy !
I meant to go, but lost the details - particularly wanted to do the basket weaving in Sept.
Hope to see you there one of these months.

I was planning on joining my guild later this month - but it clashes with school
I will join up though - it's just a matter of time

I must get onto my local one. It's quite a distance though, so I'm not sure about going.
I could find out though, couldn't I?

I go to my local one occasionally; I'm not a member, but a friend is, and they welcome one-off visitors which is nice. Everyone is friendly and keen to share skills and tips. If anyone likes the idea of going but can't commit to a regular attendance, it's worth checking if they are happy for you to 'drop in' for the occasional workshop etc.

Well, I've just looked at my local one's website. There's a meeting on Nov 14th: Christsmas decorations! Woo... I think I fancy that, and the old chap's off at a hedging match all day...
