Hatching eggsGood evening,
I ended up with some Barnevelders eggs today ...
http://www.feathersite.com/Poultry/CGA/Barnev/BRKBarnev.html
although there eggs are not that brown at all ... and the colors not as good as the ones on the pictures (maybe the fact that they were kept indoors) .. .. they still are good birds I think.
Now having travelled for 1 hour or so in the car .. should I leave the eggs to settle before giving them to the broody hen ?
Thanks,
Camile

Yes, leave them for 24 hours point down at room temperature.
Barnevelder eggs tend to get less brown as the laying season goes on - I don't know why, perhaps they run out of pigment or something?
Good luck ...

All the barnvelder x eggs I had from Chez were very dark brown, it's a characteristic that they are hard to candle. I'm a bit confused by your comments. Hope they turn out OK.

have been told by several breeders you dont really need to leave them more than an hour or so. even after posting, but in the car I'm not sure why you would need to leave htem24 hrs. but if they are really fresh, i.e. last few days then its not going to matter. Would pop them under in the morning.
good luck with them

Thanks for the fast reply Chez and Welsh Veg Grower..
I've got them in the house pointing down .. and don't know if I will be able to resist leaving them until tomorrow evening ...

What I meant was that the eggs are lightish brown ...
and the double lacing on the birds not that pronounced .. but they were kept indoors so the colors wouldn't have the best possible shine to them ..
and I'm sure they will turn out ok .. he had a good hatch recently from them .. and I am more utility of them, ie big size more than show quality ..
he also had some black Jersey Giants that I quite fancy trying next time ...

Thanks for the advices,
Loads of people said to wait for 24h .. and fewer said not to bother, so I did wait for 23h or so (to avoid having to go out again under the rain) ..
It's all down to the hen now .. but she is a proven broody so she will make me proud.

Fingers crossed for you! If the lacing is less pronounced than you might expect, it's probably not a 'show' strain ... so fingers crossed you also have some good utility birds there.

Hi Chez,
Hopefully they will be good utility as that's what I want them for.
I will only keep the hens for laying/breeding .. but most probably won't keep a cock from them (pot) ..
and his birds were big enough indeed .. so the clock is ticking.
I've penned up a pair of large white orpingtons, with a Light Brahma hen and a RIR, so should be interesting too.
