It is probably your internet service, I have been seeing big problems across loads of sites via NTL in the last two weeks

NTL have been carrying out 'improvements' which means we've totally lost our broadband at home.

It is really total, I was able to get round most issues by using:
pete-cache-2.server.ntli.net 8080
as a proxy.
