Hawthorn and Blackthorn Hedge

About to plant up a new hedge after receiving a load of new hawthorn and Blackthorn bushes free:.........I plan to plant them about 3mtrs from a building is that ok?......also spacing, planning a double row of about 5 plants per mtr....

Any advice welcomed...

3m from a building should be fine but do not let the hedge get too tall and do not plant any larger species in it. For a double thickness hedge 5 or 6 a metre is just right.

Lucky you getting free plants - we've just bought 1000 and although we did get a good discount it has still us a fortune.

Not too keen then Rob?....is there a specific problem with it?

Rob has quite alot of blackthorn hedging and its quite invasive into the fields throwing out suckers - its definitely not his first love!!!

The sloes on the other hand from it are fantastic Very Happy - Mind you we got so many just from one bush which thought it was a tree - we didn't need to go any further - Gil has made use of them as well I think

Blackthorn is really good at making an inpenetrable hedge but suckering can be a problem. Hopefully you have got more hawthorn but enough blackthorn for sloes Very Happy

It is just high maintenance, make sure you stay on top it! An overgrown hawthorn hedge is more forgiving, blackthorn is difficult to handle & impossible to lay, if left to it's own devices for a few years.
