Hay question...Finally we have managed to cut the hay, and fingers crossed, bales will be arriving here on Wednesday. I'm getting small bales for the first time, changed contractor, anybody know how many in a Hesston? I thought eight but then wondered if that was the round ones.....
As you can imagine, we are not exactly prepared for this (annual) event
and as we have the straw for the straw bale build arriving on the same day..... I need to buy some tarpaulin quickly.....

Re: Hay question...A Hesston is 4'x4'x8' & weighs a tonne, I take it you mean a Mini-Hesston? In any case they are usually baled under higher pressure, so comparing them volumetrically means you'll probably get more than you think- although it really does depend how tightly he's baled the small ones (and how small is small, and what length).

No, definitely the big ones. How heavy is a small bale, ish? I know, bits of string but rough guestimate? Thank you!

25-35kg-ish, so about 33 conventional sized bales to a Hesston.

Finally engaged brain and enquired of the nice chap making it - 1300 he reckons if rain doesn't stop play.... Am keeping everything crossed, thanks Rob.

How does that compare to the big bales last year?

We haven't had hay for the last two years, what with flooding and then rain last year. Before that, I got 83 Hesstons, the year before I had round bales, and can't remember how many, off the top of my head.
It was all going so well, despite a little shower Friday morning..... I might have known
Had to stop baling this morning after just 200 when the skies opened. Forecast is for non stop rain tomorrow, rain again on Friday.....
Did I mention this is rented land? Money going out, no hay coming in.....
Ps. I guess it would make sense, round bales are eight bales and weigh half a ton ish so hesstons are double....
