Hedgehog wakes up

Went out to put some food into Derek's cage and he was awake Very Happy First time since he went into hibernation that I've seen him, although I know he was OK, as food and water were going occasionally.

I'd forgotten how sweet he is love4

He seems strong and healthy though.

Wonder how cab's one is getting on. And didn't cir3ngirl take one off your hands too?
Penny

She did, I think it's OK, haven't bumped into her for a while, but I can ask through channels in the town (it's a very incestuous place)

Snuffles (I think) was quite happy last week: she had free run of the downstairs loo. She didn't mind having a wander onto my hands though.

My thoughts exactly.

Will there be a rewilding ceremony?

We've got one visiting our back garden now - haven't see it, but a calling card has been left.

Pretty certain it's getting in via the back fence, so I'll create a reasonably cat proof feeding area behind the shed.
Penny

Definitely Very Happy

Snuffles decided that she isn't the kind of hedgehog who hibernates, so some time in January I gave up trying to encourage her.

She's huge now, looking at the old pictures of her when we first found her its amazing just how small she was. Eating well, drinking plenty of fluids, and generally distrusting of every new person she meets (other than Northern Lad, which was odd).

Hoping to be rid of her soon, some time at the end of this month or in April.

Glad yours is awake now Penny Smile

I think the one visiting our garden is doing regular runs now - Sheba gets agitated and sits at the back door staring down the garden in the evening.
Penny

Promise I'll do pictures soon - it's all I'll have left of him shortly, except the lingering smell in the barn *sigh*

That reminded me of a picture in one of the Moomintroll books. Very Moominy things, hedgehogs.

In a good way.

For those who haven't seen, this is Snuffles. I'll put more pics online soon.

Do you know - I cant think that Ive seen a hedgehog since we moved to Cornwall? Badgers are ten a penny - the amount of dead ones at the side of roads in North Cornwall must mean there are nearly as many badgers as....well, ...cows!
Havnt seen a hedgehog since 2005.

That's because badgers eat hedgehogs. No badger control = fewer hedgehogs, ground nesting birds etc.

Shocked
really! I never knew that!
Well, you learn something new every day.

Yep, it's really sad. We see dozens of badgers here and NO hedgehogs.

Haven't seen a hedgehog since we moved---plenty of roadkill badgers though so there must be alot---the poultry houses are fox proof but not I suspect badger proof.

Check for that, Lottie: I lost 6 hens to badgers last year.

I remeber reading the romany books which had a bit about badgers eating hedgehogs...seem to remember they turn them over and use those powerful long claws to scoop them out of their spines....we don't have any hedghogs here either Sad
