hello, rhubarb question...

hello everyone. been off the site for a while. I hope you are all ok? (is it safe to mention BR****t or will the site implode!

just looking at some old posts about Rhubarb.
we are having a re gig in the garden and the rhubarb appears to be in the way of a teenagers den! Rolling Eyes

will it be ok if I dig it out carefully and offer it lots of well rotted guinea pig and chicken poo or should it stay put till after the season? there are leaves and skinny red stems present already...
I'm a bit fond of as I grew them from seed and I'm soppy like that Embarassed

my chickens are doing ok after a very long eggless winter.
the house is comfortable and warm if a little um unfinished... are they ever?

I have absolutely no idea. But I'm moving mine. It won't survive the plans I have for that part of the garden, so I'm giving it a chance by moving it. I'm sure I've read somewhere that you can split it and move it, though.

We had to dig up our 2 crowns last autumn to redevelop the bed, and OH split them so we now have 6, 2 teeny but all growing nicely...he's now planning to remove 3 of them and relocate to new homes as he assumed some of them would die! So I'd say, go ahead...they have 2 chances after all Wink

Update! Have just found THIS

"Fruit

Lift some mature rhubarb crowns, split and replant; mulch of compost over rhubarb crowns."

in DS's very own 'What to do on your plot in March' article

Yeah I've moved rhubarb no problem.

hi there, rhubarb moves well and is better for it especially if there is plenty of manure involved.

thinking of manure the brexiters are even more deluded as A50 day approaches.

back to actually making stuff grow i soaked my early mange tout* on saturday and planted them today , there will be 2 more plantings at 3 week intervals so hopefully us and the guinea pigs will have a long season

*after wednesday i spose they will be called empty peas

Thank you all.. as ever Downsizers, better than google.

I would go careful if it has already started growing, but it will probably be all right. Best time to split and move rhubarb is during the winter.

Thank you MR, I had hesitated before I pitched in... I might wait and see where the land lies when he gets his plans made.
the oldest is having one of our old caravans as a place to... 'chill' with his friends in the spot we had the polytunnel. that's moving to a spot the sun gets to earlier in the day.
