Hello

Hi from Barry, South Wales. My mate and I've just acquired an allotment and since I haven't had the opportunity to do much gardening for several years and my mate's hardly done any at all, this seems like the perfect place to come!

Hello and welcome to Downsizer Smile
How are you getting on with your new allotment ? When did you get it ? Does it need much clearing [they always seem to] ?

catbaffler is a great name !
Makes me think of that Monty Python sketch, 'confuse-a-cat'

Hi, we've just recently been allowed to take over from the previous holder, whose health isn't too good any more, because my mate's been helping out for the past year.

It needs a lot of clearing - couch grass and buttercups have taken a firm hold in a lot of places. So far we've acquired a load of carpet, which we've layed over part of the worst weed-infested bit and need to get some more soon, for the rest.

We've started to dig over the bits that are workable although the soil's fairly heavy so we haven't done a lot yet - waiting for it to dry out a bit first, rather than spoil it. We should be able to grow a fair bit this year but I think it'll really start to come into its own next year.

Re the name - Python was the main inspiration, coupled with the fact that I have an easily baffled cat Laughing

Diolch Very Happy several generations of my forebears lived in West Wales, mainly in the Ferwig area (I've seen a photo of one of the farms, sadly now derelict). Some of them are buried in the little churchyard in Llechryd.
Madame Bear

Welcome from S Devon.

Please explain how your cat is baffled. Ours is just disdainful when the requisites of life do not appear on time and to her satisfaction.

That's a bit harsh. Mary-Jane and Gervase have put in a lot of work. Wink

Hi Madam Bear Smile I know what you mean about the disdainful sniff - cats communicate so well without the power of speech....

I inherited my cat, Marmite, from my late husband. She's great company but she clearly missed her "dad" like mad following his death and would wander round the flat calling - I've never known her to be so vocal. It's almost a year now and she still calls occasionally.

She's very slow on the uptake, though once she's got the hang of something she's fine; we once bought her a treat ball, inserted some treats and showed it to her, even rolling it around till one fell out so that she could see that when moved it might yield a tasty morsel. She would sniff with great interest but it took a week of repeated demonstrations before she got the hang of it!

Her favourite toy is a fabric fish suspended from a rod, with elastic - sends her crazy and occasionally dizzy Laughing ('fraid I have a naughty streak!)
