Help from Ubuntu gurus, please? How do I import my iTunes library in to Music Player, then?

I think files downloaded from itunes have a restriction on them, meaning they can't be played in other programs using a standard MP3 format.
Psychocats page on i-tunes in Ubuntu says this about your question:
Is there any way to play the songs I've already purchased from iTunes Music Store?
Not legally. When you buy from the iTunes store, you agree to their terms of service, which states:
Security. You understand that the Service, and products purchased through the Service, such as sound recordings, videos and related artwork ("Products"), include a security framework using technology that protects digital information and limits your usage of Products to certain usage rules established by Apple and its licensors ("Usage Rules"). You agree to comply with such Usage Rules, as further outlined below, and you agree not to violate or attempt to violate any security components. You agree not to attempt to, or assist another person to, circumvent, reverse-engineer, decompile, disassemble, or otherwise tamper with any of the security components related to such Usage Rules for any reason whatsoever. Usage Rules may be controlled and monitored by Apple for compliance purposes, and Apple reserves the right to enforce the Usage Rules with or without notice to you. You will not access the Service by any means other than through software that is provided by Apple for accessing the Service. You shall not access or attempt to access an Account that you are not authorized to access. You agree not to modify the software in any manner or form, or to use modified versions of the software, for any purposes including obtaining unauthorized access to the Service. Violations of system or network security may result in civil or criminal liability
That said, if you don't care about breaking the law or the terms of service, you can probably get around the DRM by burning the DRM'ed songs to CD in Windows and then ripping the CD as MP3 or Ogg files in Ubuntu.
Also, have a look at the Ubuntu forum discussion "iTunes Linux Project". They're hopping to encourage apple to port iTunes into linux. It appears doubtful that they will however.

This is why iTunes is a bad thing. I only download from places with normal MP3 files (emusic.com, play.com etc), non DRMed, fully portable

I don't think that Chez's itunes library has necessarily been purchased from Apple. My guess would be that it's just the software that she's using. Having said that I don't know the answer to the question anyway.

if they're generic mp3 files, then a music player in ubuntu (such as Amorak or audacious) can access the mp3 codecs by downloading the "ubuntu restricted extras" via synaptic or Add/Remove. This will allow generic mp3 files to be played, but not DRM'ed files
In the terminal:
sudo aptitude install ubuntu-restricted-extras

Thank you James, that's done the trick - I have very few things that I have actually bought from the iTunes store; just stuff that I have loaded on. It looks like most of them will now play in Music Player.
Yay!
Edited to add - it would have been a pain to have to manually reload 22 days worth of tracks

Next question - is there any easy way to import my Thunderbird calendars, email etc. wholesale in to Tbird running under Ubuntu? I've installed it and can go and set everything up manually - but it would be great to be able to just import all my old mail over.

Isn't it just as easy as copying over your old profile to the new location? Have a hunt on mozillazine.com they have some good articles.

Am I the only one who thinks Ubuntu sounds like some nomadic African tribe?

It always reminds me of that drink "Umbongo, umbongo, they drink it in the Congo"

Chez

Nope . It means something like 'we all share together' in an African dialect that I can't remember. And it plays some fantastic plinky plonk music when you log in .
Tahir - I don't know. I was scared that if I did that there would be a different configuration of XP/Ubuntu files that would mean that it wouldn't work. And I currently can't find the mail files to just copy and paste them, although I am looking.
I'm pretty much up and running, though. And have discovered all sorts of useful things that Open Office does, including exporting to .pdf without any fuss at all.

Chap who started it comes from South Africa, made his millions at the tender age of 36 months setting up Thawte, the online SSL provider, then selling it for a bendy bus load of dosh to Verisign. He's also been into space.

Is that more than an old-fashioned double-decker full?

Probably as you get that bit in the middle where the two sections join. And it doesn't all fall out of the open doorway at the back. Nothing worse than trailing all your dosh down the High Street.

That, for some reason, sent a shiver down my spine.

Can I just have a small, final burst of unattractive smugness? I've got thunderbird, firefox and something called music box all working with my previous windows settings and most of the data.
I'm using 'Hardy Heron' (I think!) and it is running SOOOO much quicker. Shouldn't have to go back to using XP now unless I want to either use TAS Books, or play Caesar 4 - I can pick up excel and word files and use them in open office

Excellent, I still haven't plucked up the courage to do it

Well, to quote Doonsbury some years ago, "There's nothing sexier than a girl geek on a hot coding run"
