Yoy shouldn't loose any data with the batter flat. You probably need to take the laptop to a repair shop or find someone who is good with electricals.
Do you have a picture of the problem?

turn it off! leave it turned off until you get a new powers supply.
As mentioned above, you shouldn't lose anything

...OK...we tried to fix it (it looked so easy..the cables had pulled out from a 4 pin pluggy thing)
We took it totally to bits.
We fixed the cables.
We put it back together again.
It powered up fine.
BUT....
The screen no longer works!!!
I am using the royal we BTW...I had little to do with it.....
The culprit is extremely upset and has lent me his laptop for the evening
bu**er.

There's probably a thin ribbon cable which has become dislodged. This cable join the screen to the motherboard and that where it's likely to have come adrift. If it's a flat printed circuit cable and it's torn then your slightly stuffed (see below) unless you can get a new one other it just need clicking back in place. Be gentle with it though they can be small and fiddley.
Or you could use an external monitor plugged into the rear of the laptop.
