hen won't stop pecking her toes, please help

Help my sick hen please. For the last few days she won't do anything but lay around with her tail all droopy and pick at her toes. She's pecked open sores on 3 of her toes so far, right where the nail connects to the flesh. I can't see anything that's causing it. And now all of the other hens are attacking her, not her open sores, just her in general. She's so sad and it's breaking my heart. She doesn't want to walk anywhere. When I come in the yard she leaps up into my arms and falls asleep, like she's just gratefull to be off of her feet and away from the other hens. Any ideas on what's causing her to bite her toes? Any ideas on how I can treat the sores and prevent her from doing it more? Bumble foot is the closest thing I've found, but I don't think that is it as she seems to be causing the sores by her pecking and they aren't on the bottoms of her feet. Thanks for any help or advice.

Hello Manda.

Sorry about your hen. I cannot think of anything that it might be, scaly leg you would see and it doesn't seem to worry the hen like that in any case. There are a lot of people who keep hens, hopefully someone will be able to help.

hello manda, you chook sounds like she is in a sorry way. poor little thing. i am sorry but i have never come acros this before so i can be of little help. the only advice i can give is practical. that is to keep her clean and quiet and away from the other hens for the time being. perhaps give her feet a good clean and put a barrier of vaseline on them to keep anything nasty out......i am sure either chez, ixy or another of our resident experts will be able to help Confused

I had a young hen that had a red sore patch on her foot that would not seem to heal, with nothing to lose I put sudocreme on it twice a day. Once she could not see the red patch she left it alone and it healed completely, might be worth a try.

Sudocreme works with scaly leg too but its a bit messy Smile

The old purple spray may help with any infection but it will certainly hide the wounds from the bird.
