HMM: As a potential customer......would you rather receive your meat in;
1) All polysytrene box
2) All cardboard box
3) A combination of polystyrene & cardboard box
Assuming all the above are fully insulated (up to the legal standard for the delivery time) outer packaging, the main poll is for fresh meat though feel free to comment further for frozen.

I'd vote for a combination assuming that the combination reduces the amount of polystyrene. OTOH if delivery is fast enough cardboard only would be OK.

with you on that one. I'd really really rather have all cardboard. We can put it in our 'brown bin' which is a green waste and cardboard collection thing to be composted from the council so in other words I've a way of dealing with it that doesn't end up in landfil

I hate polystyrene: I've voted for cardboard.

As I'm pretty well always here to receive deliveries, I would definitely go for the cardboard.
If I were out during the day and the box would have to sit in the porch and wait for me, I would probably prefer the hybrid version, however.

I'd prefer cardboard too.

Although I´m a bit far away I would say cardboard. Mainly because it´s easier to recycle.

But what is that easi-chill pack with the cardboard only packaging? It looks like something that needs to be taken into consideration....
But for the record I would rather receive mine wrapped in brown paper like you get from the butchers... of course that is assuming you are delivering it in a refrigerated van and when someone is home!
Also can you recycle cardboard that has been soaked in blood?

There are some questions that can only safely be asked on Downsizer

It should not be soaked in blood as the meat should be well sealed.
If you do get some that has blood on it then compost that bit.

I'd rather have card, I never know what to do with polystyrene once I've unpacked whatever it is

I'm in favour of cardboard too - as i have enough polystyrene boxes now for my salads......
I will order some more meat, as soon as I have tidied the freezer and eaten the last bits.......

So can the card only work as well as the polystyrene for insulation purposes? If so I would obviously go for card, but as I'm a bit sceptical about that I've voted for a combination. If you could assure me the card only was just as good then that would be ideal.

I'd be willing to vouch for it, our beef from Rob came in one last week!

Well I experimented with the card & poly lined card boxes the other week, defrosting some lamb in them. I was expecting the poly-lined box to be better but found the two very equally matched.
And here's our solution to any possibility of bloodstaining:

Looks good. Yep - I would be happy with that.

but i still want to know what that easi-chill pack is?

Ah yes, sorry, I missed that part of your post.
It's the same for all three types of packaging, a gel pack for chilled foods or there is an ice pack for frozen shipping.

thanks - what can be done with them? are they reusable? recyclable?
had a look at your site - it looks very tempting.
i'd be interested in trying some but we eat so little beef that even the 5kg pack would take us at least 6 months to eat.
Anybody in London feel like splitting an order?
also curious why does lamb cost more than beef? from a completely laymans point of view i would of thought it would be cheaper as they
1) require less space
2) eat less
3) aren't bred for as long as beef before slaughter

Well firstly this is a sounding board (to see if all card packaging was the way to go) for the collective of Downsizer members at www.handmademeat.co.uk so I better not steal all the publicity
I've sold the last of our beef & have only mince & offal left from last season. The new beef season starts at the end of August, for which I can take pre-orders but there is grass fed beef available from Richard at HMM.
We aren't currently using the all-card packaging but the ice/chill packs are reuseable- just bung them back in the freezer (@ -25 for the ice & -18 for the chill packs) & they can be reused and it may be economical for HMM customers to return the gel ice packs but that needs looking at further.
As for the price of beef/lamb, I'm a little confused where you are getting your prices from? On my own site beef is £7-50 & lamb (well, hogget lamb) £6-00/kg. The prices may be slightly different on HMM because delivery is included, whereas mine is charged differently according to area.
