homemade wood stains

Hi, i've just built a new henhouse and was looking on the internet at ways to make my own wood treatments, i was wondering if anyone has made these before and how effective they were

I've used potassium permanganate to darken wood before quite successfully

Some woods, especially oak stains black using lemon juice or vinegar with wire wool in it. If you want a prettier colour blackberry juice stains lighter woods, just mash them up and rub in. Mix with a bit of water for a lighter colour.

Coffee (the mush left in a cafetierre thingy) and wire wool, soak together overnight in a jar and shaken a few times makes a nice aged look to wood. You could then varnish with a matt varnish for a lovely weatherproof finish.

What an interesting thread. Could these suggestions be used to retone and blend in sun bleached furniture?

If the colour is variable, you might have trouble matching the original Frewen.

The active ingredient to stain oak black is the iron as the tannin reacts with it.

Remember that these stains will only colour, not protect the wood as modern wood stains often do.
