Horse mushroom???

I think I've identified a horse mushroom... picked today. It smells mushroomy, is very smooth and cream coloured on the cap and large (pound coin for scale).

Can anybody (cab maybe/probably?) suggest any alternatives that I should not eat.

Many thanks.

Cab's on hols. I'm sure dpack, nettie and a few others could ID a horse mushroom for you so just keep an eye out.

To me, a horse mushroom has a slight aniseedy smell.
dpack

agricus campestris probably

Roger Phillips says aniseed BUT i just smell mushroom? Question

the one to be wary of is the yellow stainer. Try cutting up the base of the stem, if it stains bright yellow & smells carbolic then it's probably a stainer. Horse mushrooms should have a pleasant, sort of almondy-aniseedy smell.

Thanks everyone... it's now being cooked.

I think it must be too big to be campestris... and although I can't smell almonds/aniseed I'm guessing it's a horse mushroom.

I'll let you know how it tasted later.
nettie

Only just seen this but it looks like a horse mushroom to me - if it's not bruising yellow or smelling yukky, that is Smile

Thanks to all for their advice.

The mushroom was delicious.... and I'm still here!! Exclamation Very Happy

Last year I discovered parasol mushrooms and shaggy parasols.... and today I've expanded my repertoire to a third wild 'shroom. Very Happy

My own rules are to make sure that I have a positive ID in 3 separate books before even considering eating it.... and then to check here for confirmation!

Agaricus campestris can get pretty big. If you slice a fresh specimen in half it tends to bruise pink just below the gills. We've got a glut of A. campestris here atm Smile
cab

If it doesn't have an almondy or aniseedy smell, then without getting the specimen in my hand and getting a good look I'd be thinking that it could be Agaricus macrosporus. But either way, if it ain't yellow staining, and its definitely an Agaricus (you seem happy that it is), then its time for a tentative taste Smile
