How do I know when my apples and pears are readyHow do I know when it's time to pick my apples and pears? I can't remember the apple varieties, but the pears are Doyenne de Comice and a cross between Doyenne and conference whose name has just gone out of my head (all I can think of is 'courgette' ),

Tricky with pears, they don't usually start till October, some varieties are picked as late as December and there are very few that ripen on the tree. I'd wait until the first week of October unless it's Concorde or Conference which can both be eaten straight off the tree.
You should know when the apples are ready, just try a couple

Concorde, that's it....very much like courgette
But I take it that they can be picked in, say, the first week of October too - don't really want to leave them on the tree since it'd down the allotment, and it's currently difficult to get much time to go there,

You can pick Concorde now (at least in my garden) a little underdone but still highly edible.
