Train from Kings Cross. Book it in advance and it will be loads cheaper. Use this website.

National express coaches are doable but take for ever.

You'll need to catch a Thames Link train from Gatwick (the station is under one end of the airport) to London St Pancras, walk for about 30 mins to London Kings Cross and catch a train to York. Details will be given on the link Jamanda provided. It might not be wise to book seats as you never know how long the plane will be delayed for but I think you can still book the tickets - worth checking with someone who knows for sure.

Probably too late but couldn't you have flown in somewhere closer such as Manchester?

Not too late, and after reading your post I did exactly that.
Now, how to get from Manchester to York? Preferably fast.

Erm, fast may be an issue: as they're two cities they have had to fight to get any money at all. Now, if they were one, large, up-its-own-bottom city covering a similar area....
Anyhoo, to answer your question: you can get a train from the airport to the city and then a train to York, probably via Leeds. I'm not sure, but you may be lucky and have a single direct train for the entire journey.
Indeed, you a lucky person. Go here and enter the staions. There are trains every half hour, direct, which take a little under 2 hours.

Excellent. 2 hours on a train sounds nice, enough to see a bit of the country, not long enough to be bored.
We probably think different in time and distance. I will use 3,5 hours with the boat or 5 hours with a bus to get to my mother, who is living in the shire just north of here. Oslo-Bergen is 7 hours with a train. 2 hours is just fine.
Thank you very much for your help, all of you.

I'm relieved it's quicker from Manchester to York, although it's much closer it's not all that much quicker, only just over an hour. But at least you're in the sameish neck of the woods and don't have to pass through London.

I am looking forward to the train trip. Last year I wanted to take a train from London to Edinburgh (which was the reason I took a flight to London instead of Edinburgh, which is closer to Bergen after all), but my flight was late and I had to take a plane instead.

Okay, about a meeting: The 31. of August would be best for me, though I guess that the evening of the 1. of September is possible. Could we do it the 31., or will some sort of religious rule apply?
