How will my spuds do in shade?

Having cleared some old hardcore and rubble away from a corner of the garden, i find myself with an unexpected extension to the veg patch in the form of a bed of rather nice topsoil! Trouble is, it's in the shade of the shed for all but 3 hours of the day.

I'd considered growing salads in there to stop them bolting, but really it's a big enough space to get a nice crop of Maris Pipers in. Has anyone grown spuds in a shady area, ind if so, how did it work out?

Thanks Smile

Not terribly well at all, but that may have more to do with the fact that it was sluggy shade, rather than shade per se.

just 3 hours of sun? Shocked I'd be a bit hesitant.

Does it at least get indirect (reflected) light?

Does seem like a good spot for greens....

It gets a little. I might paint the fence behind it white or something, see what happens.

is it possible to move the shed to another part of the garden.

could be a nice shaded area for summer salads?

you might also find that it gets loads more sun as summee comes on.

My plot is on North side house and walled!

so it s nice and sheltered but i need to be creative about how i plant and transplant.

However a lot of stuff does loads better in shade than you'd think - and i've grown very productive spuds right against north side of house in the past. I'm having a year of spuds this year to fill the plot with loads of other goodies

Thanks for the replies. Mark that's encouraging to hear. Yep this is on the north side. Unfortunately there won't be more sun as Summer comes, due to our neighbours' 40ft conifers to the west (a subject we need to broach with them...oo-er!)

I think I'll chance a few spuds in there and see what happens, I know I can use the bed for greens anytime but am doing those in pots and tubs near the house this year for easy access. (If they're in beds they have to be netted cos of the rabbits). I'm interested to see what happens with the spuds. I'd never planned to grow any maincrop ones at all so this will be a bonus if it works out Smile
