Poplar is well known for suckering from the base or roots, so they can send up new shoots from quite a distance.
I've no experience with the hybrid ones but a bit of googling suggests at least some still produce suckers, perhaps asking on Arbtalk or somewhere similar will produce a better answer.

||big poplars are ace to climb and rather pretty but horrid to dismantle near a house ,the roots are as big as the upstairs bit ,how far away ,bout a hour away|
||My old cricket ground had humungus poplars on two sides of it and they never threw out any suckers. They were planted to stop the cricket ball from going into the canal.|
