Hypothetically Speaking

So, just hypothetically speaking, if I was thinking of replacing the 4 bird coop I got off freecycle for a nicer one which just so happened to have space for say, 6 chooks, any recommendations?

I'm seeing massive differences in prices, and I know that build/materials etc will have a part to play, but are there decent reasons why a 150 coop won't do the job (with a bit of preserving and TLC) that a 400 coop will?

Figure if I'm going down a new coop route I may as well get one which can accomodate a couple of extra birds. And if I have the space for them, it would be rude not to get the extra couple Smile

Get a shed off freegle and convert that?

If you have the space, get a decent garden shed, and convert that,
More space for the bird`s and a lot cheaper.

so true. We got 4, saying they would produce ample quantities of eggs for the three of us... now have over 40.

I think that there is a lot of fashion in the chicken-coop world; some of the more expensive coops are definitely fashion statements. And at the other end of the scale, the cheaper ones tend to be made of quite crummy wood and short screws; but if you coat them and rescrew them they'll do the job.

If you want to spend out on something new, I'd recommend my friends at Ashadale, near Axminster - http://www.ashdalealpacas.com/category/39997-chicken-houses.aspx . They will do stuff to your specifications and I think they are really reasonably priced. Full disclosure, though - I am on commission Smile.

Poultry keeping is like drug taking. You start with a few birds and before you know it you've gone bonkers and have ducks, geese, guinea fowl. Trust me I know.

Point taken, but 6 will probably be the upper limit of what I can keep in the space I have. Smile In fairness, if I had the land I wouldn't just have chickens.

Are we talking about the poultry keeping or the drugs here? Wink

Thanks for the link Chez, I'll have a look

Much as a converted shed would work it comes back to space. A coop which will hold the chickens will fit inside the run so doesn't extend the current space. A shed wouldn't fit in and I'm back to space issues. I'd prefer to have fewer birds knowing they had a decent amount of room rather than cramming more in.
