I am never ...

... ever, EVER buying anyone else's stock in again, it's just asking for trouble - it's hatching eggs only from now on.

With Judith's stalwart help yesterday, we (well, she mostly, because I was throwing up) slaughtered nearly thirty eight week old chooks that were destined for dpack. Mycoplasma turned up in their house on Thursday, six of them had it pretty badly and we felt that we couldn't simply treat them all and sell them on to someone else, even if they weren't showing any symptoms.

All the others are on a five-day course of antibiotics and fingers crossed we will have nipped it in the bud.

I have spent more horrible afternoons. But not many.
gardening-girl

What a horrid thing to do, I hope you have a better day today.
sean

How horrible for you. I don't do hugs obviously but you can have a reserved, manly nod from across the room.
Soapnutter

Oh No.
Mary-Jane

You poor b*ggers. What a dreadful thing to have to do. At least Judith was there to help and support though.
Chez

I'd like to have a quick round of 'Judith is fab', if that's okay with everyone? We couldn't have done it without her. It was very distressing.

I am watching the others like a hawk to see if we've nipped it in the bud Sad.
marigold

Judith is FAB!! Hope it doesn't spread to the others.

Fine by me, sounds like she was brilliant.
yummersetter

I expect its extremely likely that Judith is fab!
What a blessing to have such a practical willing on-the-spot-when-needed friend

At least you dealt with it properly, miserable thing to happen
Woodburner

I can confirm that judith is indeed fab. Smile
lettucewoman

not only fab but ACE!!!!!

Poor you how awful.....((((((((((((hugs))))))))))))))))
judith

Right, cut that out you lot, before I come over all unnecessary.
I did nothing that Chez wouldn't have done for me.

It was a horrible afternoon, but I am still convinced you did the right and responsible thing. I also have everything crossed that this round of antibiotics will clear it up once and for all.
sean

You can have a reserved nod too. Sounds as though you both did what was necessary. Fingers crossed that it's nipped the problem in the bud.
lottie

What a rotten thing to happen, and a sickening afternoon for you---fingers crossed that's it now.

from the sounds you are right, if you had not done this, you would have had a worse job to do later on.

Ah just bask in the praise....
Nick

She's OK, but she does have a devil dog.
jocorless

Oh Chez - thats awful for you and they were looking so nice as well

Do you want me to bring you the one's you gave me back? They are feathering up nicely - they've been kept totally isolated from the rest of the flock as they are still under the lamp in the house

Judith - you are fab - thats an awful thing to have had to do and to have the support of a friend with you is really special
Chez

Thank you, Jo, I am saving hatching eggs like mad and I think I will just set a big hatch in a week or so.

Two in my baby chicks and two of my other set of growers had symptoms this morning and one of they adult hens has a 'snick'. I started the antibiotic yesterday morning and I suppose it will take 48 hours to kick in; but so far, it's looking like the rest might have to go too.

I am feeling rather disheartened.
Louisdog

Sorry to hear that Chez Crying or Very sad Fingers crossed the others will perk up though.
pookie

aww dear how horrible, it must feel rotten Sad

well done though it can't have been easy,

I'll also award Judith a 'we are not worthy' emoticon

notworthy Cool
Effie

Sad Sad So sorry to hear this Chez. Fingers crossed for antibiotics to kick in and there be no further spread of it.
vanessa

Oh Chez, what a really awful thing to happen. Crying or Very sad

I decided a year ago "no more incoming live birds"; my imported problems were much more minor (lice and red spidermite, neither of which had been here before my introductions), but it's still a pain.

Huge (((hugs))) to you ... so glad you had help for the dispaching.
dpack

i was sorry to hear this but thank you for your good honor in not patching them up and passing them on
Chez

I've got ten cockerels and five hens left for you dpack, if you want them.

Jif? He's an absolute sweetie. Would love to dance a mean polka, and very partial to cheese!
dpack

yes please Laughing
Chez

Oh good. There's only so much chicken soup that you can get in the freezer Smile.

The youngest will be ready in a couple of weeks, but still quite small - six weeks. Is that okay? Then there's a few older ones that will be fine in with the main flock. And a HUGE, ridiculously tame cockerel who is desperate for some ladies of his own Laughing. I was going to keep him for us as he's one on his own; but I've made a fool of him.
Mrs Baggins

What a horrible thing to happen Chez! I hope you are feeling a bit better about it all by now. I don't blame you for not buying in anymore. Scary story indeed. xXx
Chez

The tylan soluble has sorted it out, by the looks of it. I have ordered collodial silver and something called herban from interhatch to use on a regular basis, along with all the other stuff that one does, like cider vinegar and poultry spice.

I have also decided to start vaccinating for mareks, newcastle disease and infectious bronchitis from now on. It will add approximately a quid per bird to the price - but it seems worth it.

It's really forced me to look at where I want to go with this and whether I want to go on with it. Moving back to Mama's in Somerset will mean that we have more space - and I am going to concentrate on rarer utility breeds as well as barnevelders and see where I get to. I like a project Wink

Have a go with gold laced orpingtons - my friend just sold a 16 week old trio for £120 Shocked
