I'm going to murder this rodent!

Blinking mouse is playing up... one of its two rollers has gone very temperamental which means I can move the arrow pointer from side to side but not up and down. Causing some rather bad language Twisted Evil Twisted Evil Twisted Evil Twisted Evil

Attempts at "cleaning" so far failed; taking it to bits shortly. After ten years of otherwise faultless service it looks like its time may be near Sad

You can probably buy a 'USB2 laser-guided stealth mouse with a human ear growing on it' these days.

A ball-less mouse may be the answer. I have been using one for the past few years and so far it has been OK. It isn't as acurate as it's predecessor when using graphics programs but it is ok for general use/internet.

Oh, how quaint, you have balls and rollers in your mouse? Laughing

I recommend a pair of tweazers when you get it open, to get all that embedded compacted fluff off the rollers Wink

Mouse fixed. Lots of fluff accumulated between the sensors - could only be removed properly by taking it to bits.

I got a mouse supplied with a laptop (equipment supplied by client) and nearly sent it back because it had the balls/rollers bit missing. Embarassed It was pointed out to me that mouse technology had moved on. Rolling Eyes Laughing

Just a comment or two on mouse maintenance.

For those with balls...
Keeping the rollers *clean* is well known to make the thing more consistent and easier to use.
But (and its something many don't bother with) its equally important to keep the ball clean. Take the ball out and wash the thing with a nailbrush and washing up liquid, Rinse and dry thoroughly before refitting.
In Andrew's case, it sounds as though the fluff/gunge accumulation has overflowed down the roller axle to the 'windmill' out of sight along that axle. The passing of the blades between an LED and a sensor is how the physical mouse movement is converted into a data signal. The axle has to turn freely, and the LEDs have to be able to 'see' the windmill blades. Dusting with a paintbrush and the draught from a vacuum cleaner (at a safe distance of a few inches!) is all that's needed. But you may have to unscrew the base to get access...

It actually used to be profitable to solder in a replacement microswitch when that broke. Rolling Eyes

And a couple of tips for those that don't have the balls (in their mice Rolling Eyes) :
Its still important to keep it clean. The lens area can collect muck that needs to be removed.
And use such mice on a surface with an even texture. Pictures and signwriting (as on the typical promo mousepad) are actually counterproductive to smooth mouse pointer movement on screen with a ball-free mouse - you'd be better off just using the desktop.

In response to Dougal's advice, I just used to take the ball out and stick it in me gob whilst I scraped the gunk off the rollers then wipe the ball on my shirt and pop it back together. No washing up liquid here - we're not that posh.

I have no immediate plans to put the balls from any mouse in my mouth... Laughing Laughing

If you do need a new one perhaps you could try this?

If anyone is thinking of getting a wireless mouse, make sure you have a good supply of batteries or rechargeables. Twisted Evil
