Me too. I thought I'd been naughty and locked out as a consequence...

I can answer some of this. There was a router loop, at least was for me, when I ping downsizer I got a TTL expired, so I did a trace route and after about 9 hops all the traffic got stuck between 2 routers (216.66.213 and 216.66.214) I looked them up on IP WHOIS and found they are operated by Hurricane Electric, so I bashed off an email to their registered technical contact and 5 mins later downsizer reappeared. could be coincidence that it came back then, but that's where the problem was.

FastServers.net is currently experiencing a network-wide issue which is impacting services in our Midwest Data Center in Cedar Falls, IA. Our network engineering group is currently working on this issue to determine the fastest path for resolution and a return to normal connectivity status.
This notification will be updated as soon as additional information is available. Your patience is appreciated.

Sounds like routing tables got messed up.

At this time all services to the the Cedar Falls Midwest Data Center location are fully functioning. No further service issues have been observed.
We will be reviewing the situation in detail and continue to monitor the overall network health. Thank you for your patience while we worked through this issue.

not very informative I'm afraid.

There does currently seem to be a hole raft of internet problems. I have some sites that are fine, some that are slow & some that just wont load at all. Then suddenly they all work ok for a bit then it goes off again.

The DNS record info appears to have been sorted now but there appears to be missing name servers now...
| Quote: | You have one or more missing (stealth) nameservers. The following nameserver(s) are listed (at your nameservers) as nameservers for your domain, but are not listed at the parent nameservers (therefore, they may or may not get used, depending on whether your DNS servers return them in the authority section for other requests, per RFC2181 5.4.1). You need to make sure that these stealth nameservers are working; if they are not responding, you may have serious problems! The DNSreport will not query these servers, so you need to be very careful that they are working properly.
ns2.myfineforum.com.
ns4.everydns.net.
ns1.everydns.net.
ns1.myfineforum.com.
ns2.everydns.net.
This is listed as an ERROR because there are some cases where nasty problems can occur (if the TTLs vary from the NS records at the root servers and the NS records point to your own domain, for example).

That report should go away when the new authoritative nameservers fully propagate.

Could anyone please, in words fit for those of us with an L on the computer (nice one, gz), explain what is happening on the net? I'm seriously paranoid about the net being taken over by little green men, and would like to understand more about security issues. Not university level, mind you, but a few sentences to explain what happened today?

Some computers stopped talking to/recognising each other. Little green men probably weren't involved and it poses no risk to your security.

Occasionally, something breaks down, just like it does in a car engine or a washing machine. Depending on what broke, problems can range from a fleeting glitch to something a bit more noticeable (like this afternoon's hiccup), until someone fixes it.

Nano elves. Millions of them inside every computer.

We'd like to thank our customers with services in the Cedar Falls location for their patience earlier this morning. We have been busy ensuring the issue encountered was fully resolved, and have been responding to questions posted through our support system. For reference that response is also provided below:
"Earlier this morning our Cedar Falls, IA (i.e. Midwest Data Center) facility suffered a large DDOS attack. The attack began around 7:15am, and the resulting impact created a high latency situation across most of of major circuits feeding the facility, and was sustained for such a period of time that null route efforts were unsuccessful.
Our network engineering team took several emergency actions to address this issue, and through efforts with our upstream providers we were able to halt the attack and restore full services by 8:12am. We have not observed any further issues related to this DDOS event.
Our network engineering team will continue to review the details of the event to help mitigate a similar event in the future.
We appreciate your patience during this event while we worked to restore full network functionality as quickly as possible.
Sincerely,
FastServers Operations"

Vegplot, you are a star! Now it all makes sense: the little green men tried a DDOS attack and the Nano elves took several emergency actions to address this issue. See how easy it is to explain computer problems to idiots?
