Ice cream makersSlightly optimistically I'm looking for an ice cream maker as that's the number 1 product I'm after making with all this dexter milk I'm going to get
Argos do one for £34 - it does a pint at a time, but I think I would prefer one that does a litre at a time, at least. I'm also reading some horrifying recipes in the customer reviews about mixing evaporated milk with water I'm wondering if the machine actually works with proper milk and cream etc?
any recommendations - I have to stick to a fairly strict budget, wouldn't want to go over £50 if possible, but small is good because I'll only be making small regular batches for our own consumption anyway.

I assume you mean the type where you put a bowl in the freezer?
Have you got a Kenwood ?
I had a little Philips machine that made a pint or so of ice cream at a time, but I broke the paddle on it twice. The ice cream attachment for the kenwood makes a litre at a time and the paddle etc hasn't snapped on me yet .
On the other hand, in the dairy at my grans there was a victorian (?) ice cream maker that you pput ice and salt into the outer (wood) case and churned the ice cream by hand in an inner bucket - more your sort of contraption I would have thought, and relatively easy to make?
....a bit like this :

Haha I like the hand churny idea, although I'm not sure that I have time to do absolutely everything that way - didn't victorians have servants?
..maybe I should just stick to periodically stirring a tub in the freezer?
I don't have a kenwood no but I've found this diddy cheap kenwood thingy:

I've got a little one, which is either in the loft unpacked from the move 6 years ago or lent out to a friend (if you're reading Caz, have you got it?), really should track it down.
It was one of those that the bowl goes in the freezer, small one, wasn't ridiculously expensive and it worked quite well for small batches.
I have a feeling it was the Magimix one in Argos, but I couldn't be sure it's been so long

Amazon have a good selection of cheapy's and most importantly, reviews of them!

I have an old Philips. It was about £30 when I bought it and it works relatively well. The only thing I would say, is get an extra freezer bowl.

We got one, but it was flimsy, I think it was magimix. Would not get one again unless it was of noticeably more solid quality.

does anyone know which ice cream maker would be a bit more sturdy than the magimixes?

I have never had a problem with my magimix, and I have been using it for about 12 years now.
The main thing is having the mix cold enough when you pour it into the bowl, so it doesn't freeze on the first turn of the blade. It is an art, but not that hard.

I've got that one as well. Great for sorbets, but making ice cream in it is like watching paint dry.

colour it green

we have magimix. it makes icecream from cream fruit and sugar just fine

we still have time - make your case as to why I should have a phillips over a migmix....

Ok - it makes the right amount for 2 people, easy to clean, easy to store.
I do have to remember to freeze the bowl for a day before I need it, but other than that it is easy.

Any problems with flimsyness?

No - but I never overfill the bowl and I only make about 2 batches a month at most......

hmmm...seems pretty even - guess it just comes down to whichever I bump into first!

Or make semi-freddo which doesn't require any machine.

I have also been reminded that I have some left in the fridge, vanilla semi freddo (don't know why that name, maybe because it doesn't get taken in and out like ice cream?) and limoncello.

I bought an ice cream machine yesterday. I'm very pleased with it. It's an old fashioned one that uses ice and salt inside a twin-walled thingy. I'm churning my second batch as I type. The first one was strawberries and clotted cream. This one is blueberries and clotted cream. Put a little bit more clotted cream than blueberries so it's not as intense as I'd like but still. It'll be lovely as an ice cream to have with other things. And the best part? The machine cost me just £5 from a junk shop. The brand is Sunbeam.
